You think that’s molly you bought?
You think that’s molly you bought?
There are a number of drugs right now currently being sold as molly or pure mdma. Whether you're on lot, at a festival, or a rave it's important to be aware that the white powder you just bought may not be 'sass' or molly but in fact some research chemical. In this article I want to talk about tests to assess the possibility of whether what you have is actually MDMA and also talk about what other drugs are commonly being sold currently as MDMA and what they do and how they interact with other drugs.
So what are some common drugs often sold as molly or mdma?
Mephedrone
What's it called?
Mephedrone is also called, 4-mmc, m-cat, drone, meph, meow-meow.
How can I identify it?
As always the only way to truly identify mephedrone is via a GMS test. Barring that the best way, however, is using a testing kit,.
Mephedrone is often either a white powder or clear crystals. When it's in crystalline form the crystals are often very long and pointy and extremely hard. This is a decent 'in the wild' indicator for whether or not you have mephedrone as the crystals will be very very difficult to break up. However, you will often find that mephedrone can be a white powder and in fact is more commonly being sold as such because it makes it easier to cut it with a cutting agent like inositol. In addition mephedrone will not have a deeply bitter, mouth puckering sensation if eaten that mdma does.

What does it do?
Mephedrone acts as both a stimulant and an entactogen (that is it makes it feel good to touch things/be touched).
One important thing to keep in mind about mephedrone is that it can be extremely addictive. Like amphetamines or cocaine you can use it multiple days in a row and continue to feel the desired effects. Also like amphetamines and cocaine, mephedrone causes one to fiend and want to do more compulsively.
There are however, several downsides to mephedrone the biggest one being that we know almost nothing about it's short term and long term health effects and therefore we have only some anecdote and speculation based on informal studies. A few things that seems fairly clear is that mephedrone both raises your heart rate and makes your blood vessels shrink (vasoconstriction). There have been several reports of people experiencing including negative side effects such as having your extremities turning blue, seizures, and highly elevated blood pressure.
How does it interact with other drugs?
One important thing to say again is that we know very little about how mephedrone acts due to the lack of scientific research that has been done on this extremely new (in terms of common usage) compound. However, we can with some assurance list some drugs, particularly over the counter drugs, you almost certainly do not want to combine with mephedrone.
In general anti-depressants are a bad idea to combine with stimulants or psychedelics and mephedrone is no exception to this rule. Mephedrone likely works, in part, by binding to various serotonin receptors in your brain. These receptors are also the main focus of numerous anti-depressant drugs such as SSRIs,MAOIs and . SSRIs include prozac, effexor, lexapro, zoloft, paxil (see a full list here).
Methylone
Methylone is again both a stimulant and an entactogen. It feels less stimulating than mephedrone initially but repeated dosings cause a very stimulating high and can make you feel really fiendish.
