**I wonder how they have gotten so much attenetion in this forum? Either there are a bunch of people who actually like these, or them being [pseudo]-legal is really that much of a draw.**

Excellent point, and it got me thinking.

If you look on any harm-reduction community website (bluelight or the shroomery or wherever) you will notice interest in morning glory seeds and or hawaiin baby woodrose seeds is very high and increasing everyday.

Why this is is a matter of debate, but it is obvious that much of the interest probably lies in the global legality of morning glory seeds and hawaiin baby woodrose seeds, and of course the small fact that Morning Glory seeds are one of the most popular household flowers/plants in the western world. You can purchase Heavenly Blue Morning Glory seeds from pretty much any garden store, and even in supermarkets.

So this effectively makes LSA (providing you aren't using extraction methods, it's a very grey area of the law) a widely available and legal psychedelic substance.

Of course, this results in disbelief: How can such a widely available, extremely common, legal seed be a powerful mind-altering drug, structurally similar to possibly the most popular and infamous psychedelic drug known to mankind, LSD??

Well, the fact is, it most definately IS. And the fact is, it's most often underrated, or even passed off as a insignificant 'herbal-high'.

This of course, leads to it most often being approached in entirely the wrong way.

And since the majority of first-time users are young people, even teenagers, who do not have access to other substances, certainly not other psychedelic drugs, this often makes for an explosive and dangerous combination.

For many of the first-time users, this is there first experience with a psychedelic drug, and they are often approaching this with absolutely no idea what to expect. And we all know what ignorance mixed with psychedelics results in....

This is why I believe a decent accurate guide (maybe even an FAQ) is required here at dancesafe, since even some of the information regarding LSA on erowid is a little sketchy and in a few cases, incorrect.

I'm very interested in doing this, but I would require some help in gathering source information and someone who is good at using accurate scientific terms and information, unfortunately I just don't have the time or resources to do all of it myself!

I'll wait for the administartion/mods nod of approval before pursuing this further!

Regards,

Psilo

*nod of approval*

This sounds great. I would certainly encourage the gathering of information about this substance. I won't have much to contribute, but please, have at it.

I've got a little draft going, but i'm needing 'sciencey' information.

What I need is the chemical name of the alkaloid that contributes to the nasuea.

I also would like all the names of all the other alkaloids in morning glory and hawaiin baby woodrose aside from LSA, and if they contribute to any physical or psychological effect.

Also, it would be great to hear from users who have taken both LSD and LSA and it would be good to hear what they think are the main differences in effect.
Also , how much you need(ed) for a trip, and how many users actually experience the unusual and unpleasant side effects of 'muscle cramps' , diahreah and vomitting, so i can gauge how common the side-effects actually are.

Anything would be helpful.

I still need people to help me with this.

Just thought you might want to know how it is going.......

I've spent agessss on this today because i'm ill and staying in tonight, so I hope you appreciate the effort!! ;

LSA/Morning glory Information Thread:

General information:

There are 3 types of seed that contain LSA (lysergic acid amides) alkaloids.
These are:
The Rivea Corymbosa (Ololiuhqui) seed, which is the rarest and least available seed, that is found in Mexico, and has a history of shamanic use dating back thousands of years.
The Hawaiian Baby Wood Rose Seed, that is much more available than Rivea Corymbosa, but not as common as morning glory seeds.
The Morning Glory seeds (Ipomoea violacea) , of which there are 4 varieties known to contain concentrations of LSA alkaloids adequate for a psychedelic experience.
Morning Glory seeds are an extremely common seed sold at pretty much every garden centre and store around. Your mother probably has some in her garden right now!

The 4 varieties of Morning Glory:

Heavenly blue (by far most common and used, due to there superior LSA content, thus reliability).
Others include: ‘Pearly gates‘, ‘Flying saucers‘, ‘Blue Stars‘, and ‘Wedding bells‘, though there are thought to be as many as 15 varieties to contain LSA.

Dosages:

This section only discusses the dosage for Morning Glory seeds, NOT Hawaiian Baby Wood Rose or Rivea Corymbosa .

This is a very grey area as reported dosages vary dramatically.

Some people seem to be much more sensitive to LSA than others. Whilst some people only need 50 seeds for a solid trip, I’ve heard others needing in excess of 800!
Secondly, seeds vary in potency, even if you are buying from the same store and the same supplier and company.
Finally, LSA (like LSD) is an unstable substance, and breaks down rapidly when exposed to excessive sunlight and eventually breaks down in the air. Therefore, the age of the seeds and how well there are stored is certainly a factor.

It is probably best (like with all introductions to new drugs) to start low and work your way up, especially if this is your first experience with psychedelic drugs.
*150 seeds was my first attempt, and it turned out to be a little more than I could handle for my first trip, so please believe the issue of ‘naturally low-tolerance‘, a lot of people do seem to extra-sensitive to the effects of LSA.
However, erowid generally states that a minimum of 100 seeds is required for a common dose (my personal opinion is you should still start lower, unless you have experience with LSD/psilocybin and the like and know how much you can handle).

Hawaiian Baby Wood Rose Dosages

Hawaiian Baby Wood Rose seeds are much larger and much more potent than Morning Glory seeds.
Whilst Morning Glory seeds contain around 0.01%-0.02% Lysergic acid amides, Hawaiian Baby Wood Rose contain around 0.30% Lysergic acid amides.
Therefore, only a very small amount of Hawaiian Baby Wood Rose are needed. Dosages reported between 2-6 seeds, so be careful, start low!

Effects of LSA

LSA is often described as a chemical ‘cousin’ to the more renowned and man-made chemical LSD-25. Indeed, both are structurally similar.
The effects of LSA are also fairly similar to LSD, but there are also many distinct differences that make LSA an entirely individual drug in it’s own right, with it’s own distinct character.

The primary effects last from about 6-10 hours, depending on individual sensitive and dosage.

The following effects are taken from erowid’s LSD vault, and I have replaced certain effects with descriptions that are more suited to effects of LSA. These additions are marked with a *.

POSITIVE
increase in associative & creative thinking
mood lift
increased awareness & appreciation of music
increased awareness of senses. (eating, drinking, smell)
closed and open eye visuals (*Open eye visuals less common on LSA, and less intense and intricate)
profound life-changing spiritual experiences
*sedative effect (Often described as a ’dreamy’ and pleasant feeling)
*apathy
*‘drunk’ feeling

NEUTRAL
general change in consciousness (as with most psychoactives)
pupil dilation
difficulty focusing
increased salivation and mucus production (causes coughing in some people)
unusual body sensations (facial flushing, chills, goosebumps, body energy)
unusual thoughts and speech
change in perception of time
quickly changing emotions (happiness, fear, giddiness, anxiety, anger, joy, irritation)
slight increase in body temperature
slight increase in heart rate
* Heaviness in limbs
NEGATIVE
anxiety
tension, jaw tension
increased perspiration
Nausea (*much more pronounced on LSA, due to other alkaloids in seeds)
dizziness, confusion
megalomania
over-awareness & over-sensitisation to music and noise
paranoia, fear, and panic
unwanted and overwhelming feelings
unwanted life-changing spiritual experiences
flashbacks
*Muscle cramps (Varies from person to person, from non-existent to severe)
*Vomiting (Varies from person to person)
*Diahreah (uncommon)

The main difference in primary effect compared to LSD is that LSA is sedating rather than stimulating.

Many users also describe it as a ‘drunk’ feeling.

The sedation/drunkeness is almost always described as a pleasant feeling and a positive effect, accompanied by
strong feelings of apathy.

Despite the feeling of sedation, LSA is still (paradoxically) classed as a hallucinogen with stimulating properties.

Chemical structure:

The list of alkaloids in the morning glory seed :

Main psychotomimetic alkaloids:

- d-lysergic acid amide (ergine) (LA-111)

- d-isolysergic acid amide (isoergine)

Minor alkaloids present are the related:
- chanoclavine
- elymoclavine
- ergometrine (ergonovine).

Very minor amounts of two alkaloids:
- ergometrinine
- penniclavine

Source: "Indole Alkaloids In Plant Hallucinogens" Richard Evans Schultes, PhD. Journal of Psychedelic Drugs Vol.8(No.1) Jan-Mar 1976

The seeds of Ipomoea violacea contain about 0.1% ergot alkaloids. These are all derivatives of Lysergic acid and most are collectively named lysergic acid amides (LSA) or ergot alkaloids. So really, LSA is a combination of ergot alkaloids, and not really a separate substance by itself.

“LA-111 (ergine) induces indifference, a decrease in psychomotor activity, the feeling of sinking into nothingness and a desire to sleep... until finally an increased clouding of consciousness does produce sleep.” - Albert Hofmann

Only little information is available on the activity of d-isolysergic acid amide (isoergine). After taking 2.0 mg orally Hofmann experienced tiredness, apathy, a feeling of mental emptiness and of the unreality and complete meaninglessness of the outside world.

Elymoclavine elicits an excitation syndrome that is caused by a central stimulation of the sympathetic nerves which seems to indicate psychotomimetic activity.

Psychotomimetic effects are unknown for ergometrine (ergonovine), which is used to a large extent in obstetrics as a uterotonic and hemostatic agent. In small dosages, which are administered for this purpose, the alkaloid apparently has no action on the psychic functions. Its occurrence in the alkaloid mixture of morning glory seeds can thus have no significant effects on its mental action (though perhaps, when taken in combination with all the other alkaloids, has a certain subtle function or role to play in it‘s effects).

Chanoclavine, is a tricyclic ergoloid which has the ring that contains the carboxyl opened. This is the biosynthetic precursor to the lysergoids. Chanoclavine is reported to be psychoactive in man, although the studies of its action are paultry (Experientia 16, 414 (1960), Albert Hofmann).

According to the results of experiments performed thus far with pure alkaloids, it appears that d-lysergic acid amide (LA-111), elymoclavine, and also d-isolysergic acid amide are mainly responsible for the psychic effects of morning glory seeds.

Additional chemicals in the seeds of morning glory called glycosides are thought to be the main contributor to the nausea and other unpleasant side-effects such as stomach upsets and muscle cramps.

Warning/Note: Ergometrine has strong uterus-stimulating properties so it's a really bad idea for pregnant women to eat these seeds.

Pesticides and treated seeds:

Many commercially available seeds are treated with pesticides and fungicides, which makes them very hazardous to consume.
However, US law states that the seed packages must by clearly marked that they have been treated if this is the case.
I am unable to confirm if the same is true for the UK.
In either case, you should always ask the sales person if the seeds you are buying have been treated with any chemicals.

In the US, the most common chemical you’ll find on treated seeds is usually Captan, and it is a purple coloured powdery coating that apparently, can be washed off reasonably well. However, this is by no means proven, and I would strongly advise consuming seeds known to be treated with any type of chemical, as consumption of these highly dangerous chemicals can easily lead to seizures, permanent liver damage, and death.

DO NOT ever, under any circumstances, consume seeds you know have been treated with chemicals, as many of these chemicals CANNOT be removed through any washing method.

*Apparently, some companies in the US actually coat the seeds with toxic substances with the sole purpose of discouraging there use as a recreational drug. I don’t know if this is true or not, it could just be a rumour started by anti-drug propagandists who want to discourage there use as a psychedelic. But then again, I wouldn’t put it past them, so it’s best if we accept this as a strong possibility.

In any case, you should always look to buy ORGANIC untreated seeds from reputable sources.

Most headshops in the UK sell organic untreated specially-bred Hawaiian Baby Wood Rose seeds for use as a psychedelic.
But there are also a large number of online companies that sell organic untreated seeds on the internet.

*note: Be careful about who you buy from on the net. I have spoken to many users who have been ripped off by websites selling imitation seeds. So make sure you buy from a reputable source.

Extraction Techniques:

Some first-time users, or users trying to avoid the side-effects of nausea and muscle-cramps attempt to extract the active alkaloids (see chemical structure section) from the seed.

I will not include extraction methods in this guide, mainly because extraction techniques are highly inefficient, and you lose much of the true psychoactive effect with all the extraction methods.

The trouble with extraction methods is that it not only filters out the glycosides thought to cause much of the nausea , but it also filters out some of the other alkaloids (Chanoclavine, Elymoclavine, and perhaps even Isoergine, depending on the extraction method used) that contribute to the overall psychedelic effect.

This is why you hear that extractions are less effective, and in many cases completely non-effective, from users. You are filtering out essentially alkaloids.

All in all, if you don’t like feeling nauseous, then morning glory seeds are probably not for you!

Methods of Administration:

Oral:

Seeds should be chewed thoroughly before being swallowed.
Seeds that are swallowed whole will NOT produce any effect, and you are essentially just wasting your time if you try swallowing them whole.

Sublingual:

This is an alternative way of taking them that has had much praise from users.

Seeds should be chewed up thoroughly, but instead of swallowing them, the user must instead hold the chewed up seed-pulp in the mouth for about 20-30 minutes, before spitting the pulp out.

All the active alkaloids should be passed into the body via the glands in the mouth (on the tongue), which significantly decreases the side-effects, including the nausea.
In general, users report that this method does indeed significantly decrease side-effects, but to what extent, varies from user to user.

However, with this method it’s generally harder to dose because you need more seeds (about double the normal oral dose, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less).

This method seems to be fairly new to LSA users, so information on this is sketchy at best, but as said, does go some way to decreasing unpleasant side-effects, namely nausea, whilst still retaining the true characteristics of a morning glory trip.

Glad you like it!

I felt someone had to finally write an accurate FAQ on morning glory seeds! I hope it clears up all the myths, and helps all those first-time younger users who are ill-informed on what to expect!

regards
