How Accurate are They?

Ecstasy testing kits are extremely accurate for identifying the presence of a real ecstasy-like substance in your pill (MDMA, MDA, or MDE), and for screening against completely fake pills.

Here are the things that a testing kit can do:

• They can tell you if a pill you have contains at least some ecstasy-like substance.
• They can tell you if a pill you have is completely fake, meaning one that contains no ecstasy-like substance at all.
• They can tell you if a pill you have contains only speed, DXM, or 2CB.

Here are the things that a testing kit cannot do:

• They cannot tell you how pure your pill is.
• They cannot tell you how much ecstasy is in your pill.
• They cannot tell you which one of the ecstasy-like compounds is in your pill. It might be MDMA, MDA, MDE, or a perhaps even a combination. .

As part of our harm reduction services, we offer Ecstasy Testing Kits for a donation of $25 or more.

Each kit contains:

• one small 15ml bottle with a spill-proof dropper dispenser.
• A plastic safety container
• An instruction sheet
• A color chart like the one below.

Each kit can test approximately 200 pills. All donations we receive are put back into our organization, and are used for further harm reduction work.

Instructions for Using the Testing Kit

1. Scrape a tiny bit of your pill onto a large, white, ceramic plate (an amount about the size of the head of a pin is fine). If you have a gel cap, just use a small amount of the powder.
2. Take the Reagent bottle out of the plastic safety container. Remove the cap and turn it upside-down over the powder. In about five seconds a drop will come out. Put a drop or two onto the powder. Turn the bottle back upright, close the lid tightly and put it back into the plastic safety container.
3. Observe the color change. The most important time to observe is the first ten seconds.
4. Use the color chart and the descriptions below to evaluate your test.
5. Rinse the reagent down the drain immediately when finished.

Color-Change Descriptions

The color chart below shows the color changes over the course of 20 seconds for ecstasy, DXM, 2CB and speed. In the presence of ecstasy, the reagent will turn black immediately. However, depending on random factors, it might start off as a purplish color (and sometimes a blue tint is visible at the end). The important thing to notice, however, is that real ecstasy will start changing color immediately, as soon as you drop the reagent onto the powder.

• If the powder contains ecstasy (MDMA, MDA, MDE), the reagent will turn black very quickly. Sometimes the black color may have a dark, purplish-blue tint to it. (Do not confuse this with a violet color change, which happens with some other substances. A reddish-violet color is not ecstasy.) It may take 15 seconds to complete the color change, but real ecstasy will begin changing to black right away.
• Sometimes with gel-caps or loose powder (only rarely with pressed tablets), the reagent will bubble at the very beginning and emit a puff of smoke. If it turns black right away it contains ecstasy.
• Be careful! DXM, the cough suppressant, will eventually turn black, but it won't begin changing color for 5-10 seconds. When it finally does start to change color it will turn grey to black very slowly. Also, during the first ten seconds you way see a tiny waft of smoke if you look carefully.
• If it changes bright orange, this indicates the presence of speed (amphetamine or methamphetamine), and is definitely not an ecstasy-like substance.
• A green/yellow change indicates the presence of 2CB (definitely not ecstasy or speed).
• If it doesn't change any color, or if it changes some other color, then the pill definitely does not contain any of the above substances.
