What the $#%@ is Sas?

So there is this drug, 'Sas', making it's way around the festivals and concerts this summer. Maybe it has been around longer, but I was just made aware of it's existence recently over the past few months. Now this 'Sas' is something that really concerns me and I will explain why; We don't know what it is! No one does!

Sas has effects strikingly similar to MDMA or related compounds (MDA, PMA, mephedrone, methylone, butylone, flephedrone etc..). Sas is purported to be made from sasafras. The problem with this is that there are no drugs contained in sasafras.  The only useful chemical as far as psychotropic drugs are concerned within sasafras is a chemical called 'Safrole'. Safrole is nothing like MDMA and is potentially hepatoxic to mamallian liver tissue (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10496370). Safrole is however a precursor to MDMA.

What I have seen purported to be 'Sas' has always been a yellowish-brown, oily, waxy and very impure substance. It is my theory that 'Sas' is simply very poorly synthesized and cleaned MDMA (or a related compound). This is very dangerous as the impurities are potentially toxic; And it could very well be PMA (para-Methoxyamphetamine) or one of many other compounds with a much more dangerous profile of effects on your cardio vascular system than MDMA.
