You should be able to get a pair of calipers at your local hardware store for less than $20, or borrow one from a tool-lending library if there's one in your community. Cheap calipers are accurate enough to measure pills, so don't worry too much about quality. Just make sure that whatever you get can measure accurately to within 0.5mm.
If you'd like to buy a caliper online, give Harbor Freight Tools a try, just watch out for the really cheap ($2, $3) ones.
