What is an ecstasy testing kit?
An ecstasy testing kit contains a chemical reagent, or a combination of
reagents, that can be used to identify whether a pill contains MDMA (real
ecstasy). Testing kits are needed because many pills sold on the illicit market
as "ecstasy" are fake and do not actually contain MDMA. Fake pills often
contain drugs more dangerous than MDMA, including dangerous drug combinations,
or drugs that are especially dangerous when mixed with MDMA (as often happens
if someone takes more than one pill in a night).
For more information on Ecstasy, check our ecstasy pages.
Why do fake and adulterated ecstasy tablets exist?
Fake ecstasy is a result of MDMA prohibition. The precursor chemicals for MDMA
are tightly controlled by the government, making MDMA both risky and expensive
to produce. At the same time, the consumer demand for MDMA is high. In order to
cash in on MDMA's high demand, unscrupulous, criminal manufacturers will sell
substitute drugs that are less less expensive and/or less risky to produce, such as
PMA, DXM, PCP, ketamine, methamphetamine, etc. Unfortunately, many of these
drugs are more dangerous that MDMA, and have been responsible for numerous
deaths. This is simply the nature of the "war on drugs." Because prohibition
means zero regulation, organized criminals can make huge profits selling fake
drugs to unwitting consumers who are afforded no protection under the law.
Can the kit identify pills containing MDMA plus another drug?
No. The testing kits are useful because they can identify pills containing MDMA
as well as screen against pills which do not contain any MDMA. However, just
because a pill tests positive for MDMA does not mean it is pure. There might be
another drug present. Unfortunately, ecstasy testing kits cannot identify
whether a pill containing MDMA contains another drug. (If you want to find out,
use our free, anonymous, laboratory pill analysis program.)
Note: Our lab program has revealed that the vast majority of pills containing
MDMA do not contain other drugs.
What is PMA? Will the kit screen for it?
PMA, or paramethoxyamphtamine, is a drug that has been found in some fake "ecstasy" tablets,
and has been responsible for a large number of deaths. For more information
on PMA, visit the London Toxicology Group's PMA page.
Ecstasy testing kits are effective in screening against PMA because they do not change
color in its presence.
